We are fortunate to be able to offer our members training from the Chambers Education Team at Hardwicke Building, one of the top three education teams at the Bar. This is the first of a series of training sessions which will look specifically at the needs of psychologists who are required to give expert opinion either in written or oral form. This initial training day is designed to cover the main information and skills psychologists need when giving evidence in medico-legal cases as well as court and tribunal hearings. Whilst the Education Team are primarily known for their work in the field of education, their experience extends far beyond this and we are grateful for the support the Chambers Team are offering us for this training day.

Further sessions are planned for the New Year focusing specifically on giving oral evidence and more detailed work on dealing with cross examination, written questions etc.

Outline Programme

An introduction to the role of the expert

Medico - legal work, family court, SENDIST etc.
What skills and abilities do Experts need?
What are the specific issues for psychologists when preparing written or oral evidence.
Basic court, tribunal procedures and expectations.
What are judges and panels looking for from Psychologists?

Written reports and written evidence

What do psychologists need to know and what are the pitfalls?
Report outlines - making it easier for the Court or Tribunal to consider your evidence.
Mistakes to avoid and lessons to be learnt

What is it like working as an expert?

Experienced psychologists share their experiences, the lessons they have learnt and the dilemmas they have faced.

Members of AChiPPP receive a generous discount on this training (The training day is also open to non-members and early indications are that the places will be heavily in demand.) As the maximum number for this course is 50 please do apply promptly to avoid disappointment.
